This story
explains how one Geoff Koch is being sued for composing music he
wrote which is too close in form to music he wrote-- but doesn't own.

The rest of the world follows "suit"...
Both the Canadian and the UK versions of the RIAA are set to start
sueing as many of the music-sharing hoardes as they can. The Canadian
version (CRIA) plans 30 or more, see the
story here. The UK version, still delightfully referred to as
the British Phonographic Industry, as taken simply to speaking in a
firm voice.

Strunk and White roll in their grave...
Adobe photoshop has some basic grammatical rules concerning what is
"correct" and what "incorrect" when it comes to making use of
trademarked terms. Are they the thought police or should you be
allowed to use the word "photoshop" as a verb?

The RIAA is suing 532 Computers.
Because they only know which computers and not which people offer lots of music for download, the RIAA has actually submitted to court, not the names of students, but the IP addresses of computers. Talk about questioning the status of the author... Story at Yahoo

To kick off the class, we start with "Are you being sued?" and music as
the battle ground for concerns over property, theft, ownership, and
fame. This
article suggests that there might be reason to distinguish
between major and minor labels when it comes to the harms of music
downloading...

Johnny Depp is our new Mascot...
On March 12, Sony Pictures is releasing what appears to be a thriller about a plagirized manuscript gone
horrbly wrong starring Johnny Depp. The
trailer features Johnny repeating the phrase "it's all about the
ending." Indeed...

Penn State Requires Napster
Penn State has decided to give their students access to the new Napster by making it part of their
fees. The system only works with Windows 2000/XP and gives very
limited, almost non-existent rights to what you can do with this
supposedly free music. Is PSU bought and sold? Stories on slashdot
and cnn...
One lone man has set out to teach the
students an alternative...
